Understanding Silver Casting Jewellery

As experts at customfashionjewels.com, we can tell you that silver casting jewellery is an intricate and fascinating process. It allows jewelers to create high-quality, detailed pieces using sterling silver and other precious metals. The primary method we employ is lost wax casting, which has been a staple in jewelry making for centuries.

Creating a Wax Model

The journey of creating stunning silver jewelry begins with a wax model. Jewelers use techniques like wax carving to shape the initial design. Once the model is perfected, it’s attached to a sprue, which will later form a channel for molten silver to flow through during the casting process.

Preparing for Casting: Mold and Burnout

The wax model and sprue are encased in a plaster mold. This mold is then placed in a kiln for burnout, where it undergoes heat treatment until the wax evaporates, leaving a cavity ready to be filled with molten silver.

The Casting Process: From Molten Silver to Finished Piece

Different methods like centrifugal casting, delft clay casting, and sand casting can be used depending on the requirements of the design. Each of these methods involves pouring molten silver into the prepared mold. As experts, we ensure precise temperature control using specialized equipment like tongs and kilns to handle molten silver safely and effectively.

DELFT CLAY CASTING SYSTEM

This kit combined with some basic tools will get you started on creating your unique castings. The Delft Clay Method of casting is a type of sand casting that allows for remarkably precise replicas of various objects in gold, silver, and other metals. After casting, the Delft clay can be reused immediately. Initially developed for goldsmiths and silversmiths, this clay is also employed in model making. It can be used to replicate an existing piece of jewelry or models made from rigid materials such as plastic, hard wax, wood, metal, stone, etc. Delft clay is moldable and allows for easy pressing of a model into it. The cast objects are highly detailed and almost indistinguishable from the original model. Post-casting, the 1 mm layer of clay around the cast gets burned and must be removed; nevertheless, the remaining clay can be reused immediately.

Finalizing Your Custom Jewelry

After the casting process is complete, the jewelry is carefully removed from its mould. This step can include various techniques such as soldering or adding gemstones and cabochons to enhance the piece’s beauty. We also perform meticulous tasks like setting ring shanks and bezels to secure stones firmly.

Fine-Tuning and Polishing

The final steps involve fine-tuning and polishing your own jewelry piece. This may involve additional soldering, sanding, or the application of borax as a flux agent during heat application. Our team of skilled silversmiths ensures every piece meets high-quality standards before it reaches you.
